One of the leading radiation therapy techniques available today
RapidArc is a high-precision radiation therapy technology used to treat malignant tumors with increased safety for the body. A linear accelerator with beams of "modular" radiation is used, which allows focusing on malignant tumor tissues with millimeter accuracy.

RapidArc allows for simultaneous changes in the linear accelerator rotation speed, beam intensity and shape. This allows for variability in radiation behavior, significantly reducing treatment time and increasing its effectiveness.

The technology developer, VMS, is one of the world's largest manufacturers of technical solutions for radiotherapy. Its achievements have opened up completely new possibilities for doctors:

reducing session time by an average of 70-80%;
complete correspondence of the radiation beam to the shape of the neoplasm;
a virtually unlimited number of positions under which the tumor tissue will be irradiated. For comparison: the old equipment provided for no more than ten positions, which greatly reduced the accuracy of the impact.

The RapidArc system combines efficiency, safety and reliability in use. And it has been successfully used in the Humanitas network of clinics for many years.

Principles and benefits of RapidArc therapy
RapidArc can be used to treat breast carcinoma, gastrointestinal tumors, gynecological malignancies, hymen tumors, lung neoplasia and other diseases.

The process consists of several key stages:

Preparatory procedures include development of an individual immobilization system, which may include a compressed air bag and a thermoplastic mask.
Undergoing a CT scan, MRI or PET CT. This way, specialists receive a number of mandatory images necessary for developing an individual treatment plan for a specific case.
Daily radiosurgery session. The procedure is completely painless and takes a couple of minutes. Additionally, the specialist may prescribe medications to eliminate or at least reduce inflammatory processes in the irradiated tissue areas both during and after treatment.
The possible range of irradiation is 360 degrees, which provides great variability and allows for the most accurate distribution of the radiation dose. Due to the optimization of the effect, tumor tissue receives a powerful emission of radiation, while healthy tissue is practically not subject to negative influence. The treatment process itself is dynamic and prompt, eliminating inaccuracies that may arise when the patient moves if older technologies are used.

The entire therapy process is carried out under careful visual control. The specialist performing the procedure has the ability to literally "on the fly" change the shape, the force of the beam and the angular velocity of the accelerator. Due to the constant rotation of the accelerator, radiation doses affect the tumor tissue from different angles, which increases the effectiveness of the treatment. Protection of other tissues is ensured by using a collimator - a system of thin metal plates, the movement of which is programmable and provides a high degree of protection.

RapidArc Special Features at RapidArc Clinic
To improve the accuracy of radiation exposure, a number of techniques are used:

Preliminary X-ray images are used to determine how correctly the patient is positioned on the accelerator table and whether there is a need to adjust his position for more precise and targeted exposure.
Cone-beam CT. This procedure is especially effective in treating pancreatic, lung, or liver cancer. But it may also be indicated for other types of cancer.
If irradiation of the chest area is planned, radiation therapy is performed with breathing synchronization. This avoids inaccuracies in the effect on the tumor during inhalation and exhalation, during which the internal organs are partially displaced.
Different types of "fixators" can be used: dummies, masks, markings, etc. Their task is to ensure the proper quality of the impact and to guarantee that each therapy session will correspond to others during the course.
Humanitas Clinic uses other advanced cancer treatment technologies, but the RapidArc system is rightfully considered one of the best in its category. A number of scientific publications about the technology, positive feedback from patients and doctors - everything suggests that RapidArc has great potential now and even greater prospects in the future. If you or your loved ones are faced with cancer, the RapidArc system can be the best treatment method. Especially in the early stages of the disease.
