Alarming reports of blindness prompt doctors to raise concerns about Ozempic side effects

Researchers are investigating a potential link between popular weight loss medications like Ozempic and vision loss. Studies have shown a connection between these drugs and eye conditions that can cause inflammation and reduced blood flow, sometimes leading to permanent blindness.

A recent report in JAMA Ophthalmology presented nine new cases of US patients who experienced blindness after using drugs containing semaglutide or tirzepatide, the active ingredients in Ozempic and Mounjaro. The specific cause of this side effect remains unclear. One theory suggests that the rapid changes in blood sugar levels or rapid stimulation of insulin caused by these medications might damage the blood vessels in the eyes.

While the American Academy of Ophthalmology advises patients with vision problems while on semaglutide to stop the medication and seek medical advice, they have not generally advised against using the medication. The Danish health authorities are also examining the connection between semaglutide and vision loss.
