Diagnostics and treatment of blood cancer using modern methods
Leukemia is a process of development of malignant neoplasms in the human circulatory system. It can have acute and chronic forms. And today effective methods of blood cancer treatment have been developed, which have been successfully used in the Humanitas network of medical clinics for several years.

The treatment method for leukemia is developed individually and depends on many factors: the stage of the disease, the type of cancer, the person’s general health, their age, etc.

If leukemia is acute, immediate treatment is required to stop the rapid growth of cancer cells. If the disease is chronic, it is more difficult to cure it to remission. However, modern therapy methods allow controlling the course of the disease and providing the patient with a more comfortable life.

The treatment uses methods of chemotherapy, targeted and biological therapy, radiotherapy and radiation therapy. Plus, transplantation of stem cells from a donor is an effective treatment. These treatment methods, as well as the specifics of the disease, are discussed below.
Symptoms and diagnosis of leukemia
Symptoms of the disease manifest themselves especially quickly in acute leukemia. A person feels weak, his appetite worsens, weight decreases and the skin turns pale. The temperature rises sharply - up to 40 degrees. Chills, bone pain are felt regularly, sometimes the mucous membranes bleed. Bruises and petechiae often form.
When palpating, enlarged lymph nodes can be detected, and the salivary glands increase in size. The disease is often accompanied by stomatitis, gingivitis, and other diseases of the oral cavity.
In case of neuroleukemia, vomiting, frequent headaches, possible swelling of the optic nerve, convulsions and even paralysis are observed. If the patient is already of mature age, the symptoms may be supplemented by a number of heart problems - angina pectoris, etc.
The chronic form of the disease progresses rather slowly, sometimes up to 12 years. Symptoms also appear gradually and do not always immediately indicate the presence of leukemia. Obvious symptoms are observed in the advanced and terminal stages. In addition to the above signs, internal organs often enlarge, abscesses appear on the skin, pneumonia is possible, etc.
At the first suspicion of blood cancer, it is necessary to undergo a comprehensive diagnosis to confirm or exclude the disease. First of all, specialists conduct a biochemical blood test, as well as a puncture of the brain and spinal cord. A biopsy of lymph node tissue, ultrasound, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, radiography and other examinations are also performed.
Main methods of treatment of leukemia
The main and most common treatment for blood cancer has been chemotherapy for many years. It uses drugs designed to destroy tumor cells. The drugs can be administered orally or intravenously for greater effect.
In addition to chemotherapy, other forms of treatment are also used:
  1. Targeted therapy. It is also a form of drug treatment using immunoregulatory drugs. These can be cytostatics, glucocorticoid hormones, etc.
  2. Biotherapy. Consists of taking medications that help the human immune system recognize leukemia. Thus, the body itself begins to control the disease to the best of its ability.
  3. Radiotherapy and beam therapy. Cancer cells are irradiated pointwise, the size of the affected organs and tissues is reduced. This allows for more precise and safer surgical operations for the patient.
  4. Stem cell transplant. The operation allows to strengthen the immune system and at the same time to speed up the processes of healthy cell production. Before the procedure, a person must undergo chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions.
Prognosis for leukemia treatment varies depending on the form of the disease, gender, age, physiological characteristics of the body and other factors. Statistics show that prognosis is worse for men, people over 60 and children over 10. Acute leukemia is especially dangerous, as the disease progresses very quickly. Although with timely detection and treatment, there is a chance of recovery. A good prognosis for blood cancer is a 5-year survival rate of 70% or more.
The Humanitas clinic uses the latest methods of treating leukemia and employs qualified specialists in the field. This allows us to make really good prognoses for patients and conduct effective treatment even at the late stages of the disease. And today Humanitas even accepts patients from other countries who need treatment that is not available in their home country.
