What are the different types of hip replacements?

Hip replacements vary based on the materials used, the surgical approach, and the type of fixation. Here are the main types:
1. Based on Materials
  • Metal-on-Polyethylene: A metal ball with a plastic (polyethylene) socket liner. This is one of the most common types, as it’s durable and affordable.
  • Ceramic-on-Ceramic: Both the ball and the socket are made of ceramic. This type is long-lasting and has a low risk of wear but can be more prone to fractures.
  • Ceramic-on-Polyethylene: A ceramic ball with a plastic socket liner, combining the durability of ceramic with the reliability of polyethylene.
  • Metal-on-Metal: Both components are metal, though this type has largely fallen out of favor due to potential complications with metal debris causing inflammation or other issues.
2. Based on Surgical Approach
  • Total Hip Replacement (THR): Both the ball (femoral head) and socket (acetabulum) are replaced. This is the most common and comprehensive type.
  • Partial Hip Replacement (Hemiarthroplasty): Only the ball of the joint is replaced. This is often used in cases of hip fractures rather than for arthritis.
  • Hip Resurfacing: The femoral head is trimmed and capped with a smooth metal covering instead of being fully replaced, preserving more bone. It’s more popular for younger, active patients but is less common.
3. Based on Fixation
  • Cemented Hip Replacement: Bone cement is used to anchor the prosthesis to the bone, often chosen for older patients or those with weaker bones.
  • Cementless Hip Replacement: The prosthesis is coated with a porous material that allows bone to grow into it over time, providing natural fixation. This is preferred for younger, active patients.
  • Hybrid Hip Replacement: Combines cemented and cementless techniques—often the femoral component is cemented, while the acetabular component is uncemented.
Each type has its benefits and is chosen based on factors like the patient's age, bone quality, activity level, and any existing medical conditions.
