What Makes Dr. Dementiev’s Expertise Unique?
Dr. Dementiev has rich experience in refractive surgery. Back in 1985, Dr. Dementiev was a pioneer of radial keratotomy, that is myopia and astigmatism correction method. Back then, only a few doctors were able to perform this type of surgery. To scale the technique up, the excimer laser was introduced which made it possible to opt out manual changing the eye optics. Still some myopia degrees can’t be treated with excimer laser. The higher myopia degrees (above 6–7 diopters) may render the use of excimer laser contraindicated. It was Dr. Dementiev and his colleagues who developed the patient selection criteria for laser surgeries, that are now accepted worldwide.
Dr. Dementiev is the pioneer and author of a state-of-the-art technology named posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens (PIOL). Dr. Dementiev has been training eye surgeons from all over the world about the selection of patients for the implantation of such lenses (MPL, ICL), preparation of patients for surgeries and - most importantly - the surgical technique itself, since 1996.
Dr. Dementiev was among the first surgeons to master the phacoemulsification technique for cataract surgery. By 1997, this technology, aimed at inserting a patient-tailored lens at the early cataract stages (without waiting for its “maturation”, as was the traditional approach in the past), has become the gold standard throughout the world. And by the time, Dr. Dementiev has already had 10 years of successful experience in phacoemulsification and using various lenses. What makes Dr. Dementiev unique is that he has been involved in the development, implementation and advancing of every today’s world lens technologies.

Dr. Dementiev graduated from the Moscow Medical Stomatology Institute with a degree in medicine and began his career as an ophthalmic surgeon in 1984 at the Moscow Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institute under the personal supervision of Academician S. N. Fyodorov.
In 1994, he graduated from the University of Pavia (Italy) and received the European Certificate of Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) in ophthalmology.

Dr. Dementiev is the one of the world’s most famous ophthalmic surgeons, scientist and inventor. He approved himself as being not only a surgical care practitioner but also a scientist and inventor.
Since 1986, Dr. Dementiev, together with Professor V. K. Zuev, has been developing and applied in practice phakic intraocular lenses to correct the high degree myopia. Dr. Dementiev was one of the first ophthalmologists who changed extracapsular extraction to phacoemulsification in cataract surgery.
In 1988, Dr. Dementiev became a head of the group that was investigating and developing keratomileusis, created by order of the director of the S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution.
For his exceptional merits, Dr. Dementiev was invited to work in Italy in 1989; there he continued the scientific development of the method of phakic correction of refractive abnormalities, and in 1994 he proposed a new model of the posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens. In 1999, Dr. Dementiev directly participated in the production launch of the posterior chamber phakic lens (PRL) in the USA, which got a certificate of conformity for use in the EU countries, and had a clinical trial protocol (FDA) launched in the USA.
